A new iPad for a visually impaired local lad

Advisory Teacher Margaret Townsend at Vision Support Services receives the iPAD from Lion President Mark Lockie, supported by club members, on behalf of her client.

Margaret then went on to say ” Once again thank you so much for your work to provide the iPad for the pupil at Budmouth College. When I went to the family home following the presentation yesterday and presented it to him he was so pleased with it and the smile on his face said it all. He was really pleased and I’ve never seen him smile so much or have so much to say as yesterday! He was busy charging it up when I left.

Vision Support Services provide a pan-Dorset support service for children and young people up to the age of 25 who have a visual impairment. This support includes home visits, an advisory role in schools, In-school training, mobility and independence training and 1:1 teaching of braille, ICT skills and curriculum content.
Presently based at Monkton Park near Dorchester and at Cedar House in Ferndown we are a 12 strong team of specialist advisory teachers, mobility officers, keyboard tutors and a resource technician. Our referrals usually come from school SENCO’s but also from the medical profession and occasionally from parents. After a functional vision assessment has been carried out, we organise a support package that is designed to meet the needs of the pupil, taking our lead from the pupil’s voice, the parent’s wishes, the setting and an early identification of the desired outcomes for the student.
Regular visits to schools and colleges are designed to assess progress, support the modification of teaching techniques and learning resources and ensure that the pupil has access to the curriculum in its widest sense to include their social and emotional well-being too.
We also offer opportunities and events for the pupils we work with, to meet in a social setting, recently we held a Halloween party and soon there will be the Christmas party.
I hope this is useful for you. If you have any questions about the above information then please get back to me.
Thank you once again you have made such a difference to the life of one visually impaired pupil (and his family) in Weymouth.
