BEACH MOTOCROSS – A ROARING SUCCESS

On Sunday the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club together with the Purbeck Motocross Club held the 34th annual Weymouth Beach Motocross. The event was an absolutely spectacular success, with over 300 brave riders taking part and with over 20,000 spectators lining the seafront. This year we changed the event from two days to one day to focus our efforts on the racing, and this proved to be a good decision. As well as achieving a very successful event, many visitors from all over the country were once again drawn into Weymouth “out of season”.

The unexpected warm autumn sunshine meant that everybody could enjoy a good day out. The riders obligingly put on a series of very exciting and skilful displays and money was raised for local good causes. All net proceeds from Lion’s events go towards helping needy local families and other good causes and this year we were absolutely delighted that we nearly doubled the amount we raised last year.

None of it could have happened however without the support of everybody involved, and we would like to thank our generous sponsors; the people and organisations who gave their time and equipment, the efforts of the members of the Purbeck Motocross club; the wives and friends of the Weymouth Lions club; members of Lions clubs from Dorchester and Bridport; the Weymouth Carnival and Events club; and in particular the Weymouth Community Volunteers.

We are grateful most of all however to the members of the public, who supported the event, bought our merchandise and programmes and made generous donations. This will enable us to help more people less fortunate than ourselves during the coming year.

On November 29th this year the Lions will be putting on their annual free Christmas show for seniors at the Pavilion; watch out for tickets. A month after that the club will again be holding the not-to-be-missed annual Christmas Day harbour swim. Over 300 intrepid swimmers took to the water last year and we are expecting a similar number this year, if not more. Registration forms will be available fairly shortly; watch our website and facebook page for information. Please join in and help the Lions to help others.

Next year Motocross will be held on Sunday, October 22nd, we hope to see you all there!
