Preparations are well under way for the annual Beach Motocross staged by Weymouth & Portland Lions Club together with the Purbeck Motocross Club.

Entries from across the south of England are coming in fast now and it is anticipated that over 200 riders will take part in this thrilling and spectacular sport.

A previous double winner of the Expert Class, 23 year old Jake Shipton, is a local lad who lives at Wareham. Jake is a professional and spent last year riding in Dubai and returned home in time to win the Weymouth Beach Motocross.

Jake, who rides for Crescent KTM Racing, was 1st overall in the Ken Hall Trophy, is ranked in the top10 in the British Championships and in the top 3 in the Motocross Nationals Championship.

Jake says ‘I’m really look forward to racing at Weymouth again being a local race and an exciting one, a good crowd always turns out and can get close to action. It’s a difficult race to stay out of trouble, you’ve got to be smart and choose the correct lines and just relax and be smooth, make the clean passes on the slower rider which pay a part in the race. Hopefully I can get out front early and just be smart and ride my own race. The Purbeck and lions club always put on a good event which runs smoothly and the track keeps the riders on their toes all day. See you all on race day’.

Lion President Mark Lockie says ‘Weymouth Beach Motocross is the original and the best beach motorsport event in Weymouth. We’ve been going for over 30 years and we pride ourselves in providing free entertainment to residents and visitors alike while raising money for local good causes.

Alf Stearn, The Chairman of Purbeck Motocross Club saysWe already have lots of entries for this year’s races so we can promise a great event this year. So Weymouth Esplanade is going to be an exciting place to be on Motocross Sunday!’

Waterside Group’s Managing Director Graham Frampton says:-

‘We try and support local community good causes when we can –and the approach from the Lions made good sense to us both in terms of a charity fundraiser and since it provides shoulder season entertainment for our visitors and exciting family fun. We are all about providing a quality visitor experience and top class events fit into that ambition.’

So come along and enjoy the free show, spend a little money at the stalls on the Esplanade –selling everything from specialist motocross kit to hot food, cockles, donuts, sweets, fudge etc. We also have a Classic Car display at the Jubilee Clock on the Esplanade plus a display of Motorbikes.

We do all this with help from local businesses to build the course, create the jumps, ramps etc. and indeed to pay for the production of the programme and to provide publicity. This year again our media partners are the Dorset Echo and Wessex FM who will be broadcasting live from the Esplanade.

But the great thing is it’s a free charity event open to anyone who cares to take a stroll down the Esplanade and all proceeds go to local good causes!

There will be a Press and Media opportunity with photo opportunities with motocross riders at Weymouth Pavilion on Thursday 6th October at 11am
