Bellinger Trophy – and the winner is ……………….BRIDPORT!

On Thursday 11th May the Lions of zone 1A, Bridport, Blackmore Vale, Dorchester & District and Weymouth and Portland, were preparing themselves for the battle ahead that evening.  They met at the Colliton Club in Dorchester for the annual Bellinger Trophy Skittles competition which has been keenly contested for over 30 years.  The event was the brain child of Lion Jack Bellinger of Dorchester Lions who presented the first trophy.  In the early days it was decided that the club which won the competition would organise the event for the following which meant of course that every club played to lose.  Apparently winning was somehow by default.

This year 49 members from the zone clubs attended who not only played skittles but enjoyed a supper part way through the evening as all the players needed sustenance for the final leg of the match.  The team from Bridport Lions, led by their enthusiastic President Lion Lucy Paull, led from the very first leg and won the event with 115 pins.  Second place went to Dorchester & District with 113, third to Blackmore Vale with 110 and last was Weymouth & Portland with 92.  Having won the event last year Weymouth & Portland felt it only right that they should let some other club win this year.   The Trophy was presented to Lion Lucy Paull by the Zone Chairman Lion Peter Oswick of Blackmore Vale Lions Club.
