Lions President Les Board assisted the Mayor in raising the UN flag and in acknowledging Lions involvement in the ceremony said “We are often asked how Lions Club International is so involved with the United Nations.
Lions Club International was formed in 1917 in Chicago, and now has 46,000 clubs with 1.35 million members in over 200 countries making it the largest service club in the world.
When the United Nations was founded in 1945 Lions Club International was held in such esteem that they were invited to assist with the drafting of the United Nations Charter, a singular honour for a non-governmental organisation. Since then, on an international level, Lions have a continuing relationship w h the United Nations – particularly in the areas of worldwide health initiatives and humanitarian aid to large scale disasters.
We are proud to be here in Radipole Park Gardens to help celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and are pleased to pledge our continuing support”.
