  This evening saw Weymouth and Portland Lions Club welcome it’s third female member.  Barbara Mitchell was introduced to the club by its first female  member Julie Storey who joined just last year and she, along with fellow Lions, was delighted to welcome Barbara who is a busy member of the community with her voluntary work for both the Citizens Advice Bureau and Weymouth Pavilion. PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING DAY TESTED OVER 200 LOCAL MEN

Prostate Cancer kills over 11, 500 men per year. However, if identified early survival rates can be much improved. The New-Man Group in Partnership with PCaSO ( Prostate Cancer Support Organisation) and the Lions Club carried out over 200 free PSA blood tests on local men at The Pavilion in the Ocean room. (The New-Man Group is named in honour of their founder, Barry Newman, who was the driving force in setting the group up though terminally ill with the disease). Lions out collecting for Marie Curie

Weymouth & Portland Lions were out in force at Morrisons Supermarket in Weymouth raising funds for Marie Curie as part of a national campaign by Lions throughout the UK. A total of £534 was raised which earned them a grateful vote of thanks from Sue at Marie Curie.

Weymouth celebrates it’s 70th Christmas Day Swim

This annual event which has been run by the Lions since the mid 70’s has grown immensely with 330 brave souls taking the plunge this year raising thousands of pounds for their chosen charity. The first swim took place in 1948 as a bet between a publican and a taxi driver, this year our medal sponsors were a publican and a taxi driver, coincidence?
